Standard Weight Range
53.5kg ~ 66.2kg
BMI Formula
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ [height (m)]². For example, at 170cm (1.7m) and 65kg: BMI = 65 ÷ (1.7 × 1.7) = 65 ÷ 2.89 ≈ 22.5, which falls in the normal range.
BMI Categories (Asia-Pacific Standard)
Below 18.5 — Underweight
18.5 – 22.9 — Normal
23 – 24.9 — Overweight
25 – 29.9 — Obese Class 1
30 and above — Obese Class 2
The Asia-Pacific standard classifies lower BMI values as at-risk compared to the general WHO standard. This calculator uses the Asia-Pacific standard, similar to the Korean Society for the Study of Obesity's criteria.
Limitations of BMI
Because BMI is calculated from height and weight alone, it cannot distinguish muscle mass from body fat. A muscular athlete may show a high BMI despite low body fat, while a person with so-called "skinny fat" body composition may have a normal BMI but a high body fat percentage. For a more accurate assessment, consider pairing BMI with a body fat measurement (e.g., a bioelectrical impedance scan).
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. My BMI is normal but my body fat percentage is high — why?
A. This is often called "skinny fat" — low muscle mass with a relatively high body fat ratio. BMI alone can't reveal body composition, so a body fat measurement is needed alongside it.
Q. Do adults and children/teens use the same BMI standard?
A. No. People under 18 use age- and sex-specific percentile charts instead. This calculator uses the adult standard.
Q. Why does having more muscle raise my BMI?
A. BMI only accounts for total body weight, so muscle weighs the same as fat in the calculation. That's why a muscular person with low body fat can still show as overweight or obese by BMI.
Q. Do Asian and Western populations use different BMI thresholds?
A. Yes. Unlike the general WHO standard, the Asia-Pacific standard treats lower BMI values as risk thresholds at the same body fat percentage. This calculator uses the Asia-Pacific standard.
Q. Can pregnant women use this calculator?
A. During pregnancy, weight gain is a normal part of the process, so standard BMI categories don't apply well. Consult an OB-GYN for weight management guidance during pregnancy.
